The Purpose of this Website:
The site introduces a new series of textbooks under the title ‘The History of Explosives’ It is divided into two volumes:
Volume I,’ From Corn to Cordite’, in the course of 533 pages, tells the story of the establishment of a explosives and cordite factory in Essex. In doing, so it takes the reader from an agricultural local economy to the start of the industrialisation of small towns and communities. The chemistry and mechanical methods are described in some detail. The individuals who establish the factory are also described in some detail. Fully indexed.
Volume II, tells the story of the challenges faced by Alfred Nobel and others when the Government decide that the War Department should own the manufacture and control of propellants that are needed by the big guns being installed on the navy ships. Many thought that the private entrepreneurs of the time were subjected to a deceitful loss of their intellectual rights. The resulting court cases are described in detail and the developing chemistry and manufacture is described. This might at first sight seem a boring subject; but the story has all the deviousness of ‘Yes Minister’ without the humour. 548 Pages. Fully indexed.
The ancillary book ‘Sir William Anderson – A Biography’ is about the engineer who was, in the authors opinion, the 'patsy' in the ‘Cordite Case’.
Family History: Included are a number of free downloads of resources to follow up the family history of Messrs McRoberts and Anderson.
The books are available in PDF format for purchase as Cd's or for download.
The Author introduces a book that is 'on the slips’ telling the story of the Liberty ship S.S. Richard Montgomery now sunk in the Thames near Sheerness.
