Who was William Anderson?
At first glance the records seem to show that he was someone with a poor reputation, however a detailed examination of the evidence, which is presented later, shows that he was a clever engineer, resolute family man. He had a fine reputation in the town of Erith in Kent that he made his home for many years, he contributed to the church and to the local community. Much of the dishonourable activities that were placed at his door were the result of his involvement with others who did not have his personal integrity but were imbued with venality and hegemony that described many but not all of the very influential characters that populate his story. In one case a level of hubris that was beyond belief. On researching Anderson the author became drawn to him as a fine example of a man of influence and power who was at the same time a gentleman much loved by all in his neighbours and friends in Erith
