The telling of the ‘Montgomery Story’ should be a simple one:
The vessel arrives in the Thames, sinks, rescue attempts are made, hazard
marker buoys laid, time passes and all is forgotten like thousands of other vessels around the English coast. What you might ask was different in the case of the SS. Richard Montgomery? From the beginning of the saga there were details that were straight out of a moving picture plot. For instance, the naval officer in charge of assigning the mooring told the pilot to moor in the wrong place he then transfers the subordinate who questions him. The naturalised German Captain was asleep when the ship dragged its anchor and the first mate judging by his actions, or inaction, seemed to be asleep on watch. The US navy and the British navy played football with the situation and the politicians played pass the parcel. Most of the documentation and
records of the enquiry disappear or are claimed to be unavailable. Rumours began to circulate that some of the munitions were fragmentation bombs clustered into packs of six together and packed with primed fuses. Little wonder that the story lingers and is embellished.
This book aims to throw some light on the story; it draws no final conclusion on outcomes but aims to provide a clear forensic analysis of the physical evidence, primary documents and witness statements. The objective is to provide an accessible source of information, facts and some hypotheses to allow the general readership to make up its mind and decide what is fact, what is credible and what is fallacy.
The author does not challenge, contest, dispute or refute what others have said on this thought provoking subject, this judgement is left to the discernment of the reader.
